Be on the Lookout for…

  • If you have not registered for xtramath and brainpop accounts for your child at home, please do so asap. Codes and directions went home last week, but I can resend if needed. These will help ensure students are getting necessary home practice along with what they are learning at school. A password cheat sheet with ALL student account info will be coming home later this week. Please keep this inside agendas.
  • Tuesday folders are jam packed full of work today. Please take time to review work samples and work with your child on areas they struggled.
  • 1st quarter interim reports, along with Literacy assessment results will come home THIS Friday, 9/30. Please sign and return right away. We will have conferences scheduled for the End of 1st quarter but if you need to meet with me before then just email me and let me know!
  • HELP! Your teacher is in need of plastic sheet protectors (3 hole punched). Anyone who donates will be rewarded with dojo points and eternal gratitude:)
  • If you haven’t already, please follow us on twitter @MrsVaughan3 so you can check out the great things happening in our room in real time. Students earn points for followers they bring to our page!

This week in Literacy:

LITERACY ASSESSMENTS ARE FINISHED!! Can you tell I am a little excited to be past that and onto bigger and better things? 🙂 We are also finishing our unit on character traits and will continue to use the PARTY strategy to help us read and respond to questions.

This week, we are starting our “100 Words You Need to Know” spelling activities. Directions are laid out in the plastic sheet inside agendas, but basically students study 1 group/list per week with a quiz on Friday. They are expected to complete 2 practice activities per week in preparation for this quiz. If they pass all the words, they are finished with spelling tests for the year! If they miss words, they will go into a bank of words to be retested on in makeup weeks in December, January, etc. In short- it pays to study and pass the 1st time! word-spelling

In writing, we are wrapping up our personal narratives about an injury we have had. The more details, the better the story!

This week in Math:

This week students are working on rounding and estimation. Students have learned a few rounding strategies including the hundreds board, number line, mountain, and of course the rounding rap! The hardest part of this skill seems to be reading carefully to find tens or hundreds when rounding, so pay close attention!

An awesome former coworker of mine created an amazing math review resource organized by skill. Check it out for games and activities on any math concept we cover in 3rd grade!

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
