This week in Literacy:

Reminder of this month’s reading incentive:
Reading passport- Students have until March 30th to “Read Across America”. Each 20 minutes of reading equals a new state stamped by me in class on their passport. If they reach the goal of 1000 minutes by the deadline, they will be invited to an afterschool Luau to celebrate their reading stamina! All YOU have to do parents is acknowledge the reading titles and minutes each night at the bottom of agendas. Students are of course encouraged to read over weekends too:) This is meant to be fun; please be sure your child isn’t stressing and staying up until midnight reading. Thank you for supporting your child as we push them to be voracious readers with improved reading stamina!

Our class is reading Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone this month. If your child has their own copy of this story or wants to get one, they are welcome to bring them in! We will celebrate “Harry Potter Day” on Monday, March 27th. Class activities will have a focus on that theme and students are welcome to dress up in Harry Potter attire or wear the colors of their chosen house! Please do not go spend money on this; it’s all optional and for fun.

This week our students are working hard writing their scripts of the NEXT imaginative chapter of Peter Pan as a play. It focuses on Wendy’s daughter Jane and the adventures SHE has in Neverland. We will also perform the play “Chicken Little” for our 1st grade reading buddies tomorrow.

This week in Math:

Students are continuing a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes

Current vocab: numerator, denominator, unit fraction, partition, number line, visual model

Timed multiplication quizzes are in full swing!! Your child has an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 90 second timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments! QUIZZES WILL BE EVERY Tuesday and Thursday. Your child chooses which fact to quiz themselves on until they complete all!
