Weekly Update 2.8.21

By In News & Updates On February 8, 2021

Be on the Lookout for…

  • We have remote learning every day this week. The schedule can be found here and is anchored at the top of your child’s Google Classroom homepage.
  • Next week your child returns for IN PERSON instruction on WED, Feb 17th. Mon/Tue are non school days for students so there will be NOlive meets or asynchronous work.
  • Wed, Feb 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day. I would like to celebrate this in the classroom as a way to celebrate being back together. Children are encouraged to write, bring, or make something kind for their classmates to share that afternoon. An easy way to do this is sending Valentines since we will not be in school on the 14th. This is not required, but I know our kids could use some “normal” and something to look forward to. If you are sending something edible, please just make sure it is store bought:) Student names/class list can be found on page 2 of our schedule linked above.
  • Next Thurs Feb 18th students will take the NCCheckIns for math. This is not part of their grade but does give good data on how your child is doing on math standards covered since the beginning of this school year. These will be done online so all children will need to bring their device to school with them. More info to come on this next week!
  • When your child comes back, they should bring ANY/ALL learning materials used in Jan/Feb back to school. The whiteboard/marker can remain at home for asynchronous days. They should also bring a DAILY snack, refillable water bottle, and a spare mask (in case the first gets wet, dirty, lost).

This week in Literacy:

Students are reading “Paul Bunyan” this week. We will continue to focus on character traits. We are able to make lots of connections with our last story, and focusing again on characters, theme, and even figurative language. Asynchronous reading this week will be using this assignment based on the Tortoise and the Hare.

In writing, students will turn their country research draft (due last Thurs) into beautiful Google Slides to showcase their knowledge of the country they chose to research. We will share these in person next Fri Feb 19th at our class International Festival. Here is a copy of the template students will use to create their project.

This week in Math:

Students are wrapping up a unit on Area and Perimeter which puts their multiplication fact knowledge to work! This is a concept that students enjoy but can get easily confused with if they rush or mix up concepts. Area is the space INSIDE something and we teach it 2 ways. A basic quadrilateral is solved by multiplying Length X Width to get Area. Students will also use unit squares to count area, particularly for odd-shaped polygons. Please see tutorials and practice with games as needed.

TIMED MULTIPLICATION QUIZZES: will continue this week with 2’s. This will be virtual in the live meet Friday morning. Students will prepare for this by practicing throughout the week using activities from their math board. A copy of this week’s math board is attached here. Every students should check off assignments DAILY, to be ready to turn in Friday.

This week in Science/Social Studies:

We are wrapping up our Force and Motion unit. Students will present their at home projects Wednesday. Attached you’ll find a copy of the slide explaining the project. Your child may need help finding materials, but should work on the project independently. A trial run of presenting it to you prior to in class could be helpful.
