Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday Folders will come home today. Please check your child’s agenda for homework.
  • To wrap up our study of changing states of matter, we will have a”Pancake brunch” around 10:15 Friday morning. Please let me know if your child is not permitted to eat the pancakes and I will have a backup plan for them.
  • Spring photos and class pictures will take place Tuesday, February 27th. Order forms and info are coming home in folders today. Please return promptly.

This week in Literacy:

Students are zoning in on Text Structure this week. This includes previously covered topics of: description, sequence, cause and effect, problem and solution, and compare and contrast. We are also continuing nonfiction and are enjoying “Weather” by Seymour Simon. Amazing photos, diagrams, and complex text make this been really eye opening!

This week in Math:

Multiplication quizzes will continue this week. Students have the 10’s test Wednesday Feb 21st. Makeups for any missed facts will take place THIS Friday. PLEASE do what you can to help students learn these facts quickly. They are expected to answer 16 in a minute. Fluency is key!

Students are continuing a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes word- partition

Current vocab: numerator, denominator, unit fraction, partition, number line, visual model

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, area, perimeter, rectilinear area, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property, graphs, pictographs, bar graphs

This week in Science:  Changes

3.P.2 Understand the structure and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change.
3.P.2.1 Recognize that air is a substance that surrounds us, takes up space and has mass.
3.P.2.2 Compare solids, liquids, and gases based on their basic properties.
3.P.2.3 Summarize changes that occur to the observable properties of materials when different degrees of heat are applied to them, such as melting ice or ice cream, boiling water or an egg, or freezing water.
3.P.3.2 Recognize that energy can be transferred from a warmer object to a cooler one by contact or at a distance and the cooler object gets warmer.**
