Weekly Update 10.25.22

By In News & Updates On October 25, 2022

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday folders come home today. They include work samples and a book fair flyer. If you purchased tickets in advance for the fall festival, they should be in your child’s folder as well.
  • Students will do COGAT testing Oct 25, 26, and 27th. This is a paper and pencil test that is an hour for 3 consecutive days. This is a screener and students do not need to study or prepare for this test.
  • The school’s Fall Festival is THIS FRIDAY October 28th at 5:30. Thank you for all your help putting together an awesome raffle basket!  The signup genius can be found here.  I hope to see many of you at this fun event!
  • We have a funky schedule the next few weeks. Please be sure you have marked the most updated days out for students! Also, if you plan to vote on election day, November 8th, it would be awesome to bring your child with you! We have spent a good amount of time learning about the structure of government and the voting process. I can think of no better lesson than seeing you vote in person! word-VOTE
  • Parent/teacher conferences will be held the week of November 14-18. Please view the sign up genius with specific times and dates. If you already know that week does not work for you, or want to meet sooner, please dojo message me.

This week in Literacy:

We read Thank You Mr. Falker as our last story highlighting a child overcoming difficult learning challenges. We will also record ourselves reading the fluency passages to piece together a class audiobook.

Students will finalize their own Overcoming Reading Challenges essay and create a keepsake bookmark. On Friday we will have an art museum style showcase where students will display their final products and get to learn about the challenges of their peers.

As a class, we are reading “The Wild Robot” aloud together. Thank you to all who sent 1 (or even 2) copies for our students to read along with.

This week in Math:

We are still working in Unit 3, which is stories with Addition and Subtraction. This unit always proves to be tricky for students. Please view the parent guide to help you assist your child and understand the various addition and subtraction lingo.

There are some blue cheat sheets in agendas . Please keep those in agendas so they can be used at school and at home during unit 3 which focuses on a variety of addition and subtraction of methods.  We do teach regrouping as a strategy this year (yay, finally the way you learned growing up), but it is alongside the methods they have been taught previously to ensure core understanding. Some of these may NOT be familiar to you as parents so it is VERY important to use the example coming home from what students did that day. Some very helpful parent links to what we are doing can be found here: Place Value Addition    Show All Totals/Partial Sums   Addition on a # Line   Place Value Subtraction  Subtraction on a Number Line
