This week in Literacy:

We will spend the rest of 1st quarter reading and comprehending Fables and Folk Tales. There are major differences between these 2 types of Traditional Literature and your child will be an expert in them. This week our focus on on tall tales and legends, so share your favorite Pecos Bill/John Henry/Paul Bunyan story with your child.

This week, we are continuing our “100 Words You Need to Know” spelling activities. Directions are laid out in the plastic sheet inside agendas, but basically students study 1 group/list per week with a quiz on Friday. They are expected to complete 2 practice activities per week in preparation for this quiz. If they pass all the words, they are finished with spelling tests for the year! If they miss words, they will go into a bank of words to be retested on in makeup weeks in December, January, etc. In short- it pays to study and pass the 1st time!

In writing, we are learning about abstract nouns. Learn more here!

Students are also reviewing prefixes, suffixes and root words to see how meaning can change when adding things before or after the base word.

This week in Math:

It’s here, it’s here! We are officially connecting repeated addition and patterns to open our minds to multiplication and division concepts. The will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is not the goal (YET…) rather, I want to ensure students know when and WHY multiplication should be used. There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
