Be on the Lookout for…

  • Field trip forms and payments are due asap. The read through all the info, and return ALL permission, lunch, etc forms ASAP. Please use the OSP system to pay for these field trips all at once. Thank you to the 3 chaperones we already have for this trip. IMAX will not allow more at this time, but if n opportunity opens up, I will let you know.
  • A password cheat sheet with ALL student account info is now complete. Please keep this inside agendas. These will help ensure students are getting necessary home practice along with what they are learning at school.
  • October 31st will now be a regular school day, NOT a teacher workday. Please let me know if you will not be here so I can plan my day the most effectively.

This week in Literacy:

We will spend the rest of 1st quarter reading and comprehending Fables and Folk Tales. There are major differences between these 2 types of Traditional Literature and your child will be an expert in them. Ask them about Aesop! word- Aesop

This week, we are continuing our “100 Words You Need to Know” spelling activities. Directions are laid out in the plastic sheet inside agendas, but basically students study 1 group/list per week with a quiz on Friday. They are expected to complete 2 practice activities per week in preparation for this quiz. If they pass all the words, they are finished with spelling tests for the year! If they miss words, they will go into a bank of words to be retested on in makeup weeks in December, January, etc. In short- it pays to study and pass the 1st time!

In writing, we are learning about abstract nouns. Learn more here!

Students are also working with prefixes, suffixes and root words to see how meaning can change when adding things before or after the base word.

This week in Math:

This week students are finishing geometry! This topic is fun but vocabulary is KEY to understanding. For this reason, students will keep a geometry cheat sheet inside their agendas. For homework this week in math, they will need to shuffle and rematch vocab words daily. Please help however you can with this. We will begin multiplication towards the end of the week and spend LOTS of time with 3rd grade’s favorite pastime:)

An awesome former coworker of mine created an amazing math review resource organized by skill. Check it out for games and activities on any math concept we cover in 3rd grade!

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
