Weekly Update 1.9.18

By In News & Updates On January 9, 2018

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday Folders will NOT come home today, but you will receive a yellow assignment card for next year in your child’s agenda.
  • Students will have NO school Mon, Jan 15 (MLK holiday)
  • Mon, Jan 22 was a Teacher Workday, but is now a regular school day for students. Please plan to attend!

This week in Literacy:

Students are finishing our literacy unit on interesting and unfamiliar places, by reading a fictional narrative called “The Song of Sky and Sand”. It focuses on a girl who lives in one of the extreme places we have learned about. Our focus is on the theme/central message of the story which is a tricky concept for most 3rd graders.

Students will undergo mid year MClass benchmark assessments for the TRC, Dibels, and Daze measures this week and next week. These are one on one tests done to see what growth they have made in oral and written comprehension at the midway point of the year.

You may have heard mumblings about an upcoming biography project that students will participate in beginning in a few weeks. There are a few components of this, 95% of which will be completed in school. Parent help may be needed though in the choosing of the person of focus, and the attire your child wears for the “Famous Person Teaparty”. This event will be for students only, but lots of photos will be taken to capture this fun day. Here is the list of people students may choose from. Students will submit their choice on the week of January 16th.

This week in Math:

Multiplication quizzes will continue this week. Students have the 6’s test NEXT Wednesday January 17. Makeups for missed 5’s or any past quizzes (1,2,3,4) will take place THIS Friday. PLEASE do what you can to help students learn these facts quickly. They are expected to answer 16 in a minute. Fluency is key!

Students are beginning a fun and challenging unit on Area (and soon perimeter) which puts their multiplication fact knowledge to work! This is a concept that students enjoy but can get easily confused with if they rush or mix up concepts. Area is the space INSIDE something and we teach it 2 ways. A basic quadrilateral is solved by multiplying Length X Width to get Area. Students will also use unit squares to count area, particularly for odd-shaped polygons. Please see tutorials and practice with games as needed. Students will bring home a cheat sheet today to help!

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property, graphs, pictographs, bar graphs

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here

This week in Science:

3.L.1 Understand human body systems and how they are essential for life: protection, movement, and support.
3.L.1.1 Compare the difference functions of the skeletal and muscular systems.
3.L.1.2 Explain why skin is necessary for protection and for the body to remain healthy.
