Weekly Update 1.17.23

By In News & Updates On January 17, 2023

Be on the Lookout…

  • Folders will come home again today. They contain information about our field trip and IOWA test results (if your child took that test a few weeks back).
  • There is a teacher workday Friday, January 27th. Report cards come home Friday, February 3rd.
  • Mrs. V needs you! I have updated our classroom wishlist to include some things I need for THIS Friday’s reading party. If you are willing, please help support these needs asap. Thank you!
  • Our field trip will be 3/17 to the Life and Science Museum in Durham. Please return any field trip forms and submit payments ASAP. Checks can be sent, or you may find the OSP online payments easiest (I do!) word-fieldtrip
  • If you are interested in being a chaperone, please let me know FIRST. Then, please contact the office via phone or email Maria Stio mstio@wcpss.net to ensure you are a registered volunteer with WCPSS. This must be renewed each year. One additional note, I need to know the exact name the PARENT uses to register (Ex. HR cannot search for “Kate” if she registered as “Katherine”). A different name other than what I provide to HR will result in parent showing as “Not Approved”.
  • Timed multiplication quizzes are underway!! Your child will have an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 90 second timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments! QUIZZES WILL BE EVERY Tuesday and Thursday. Your child chooses which fact  to quiz themselves on until they complete all!
  • The MYSTERY READER signup has been updated to include 2023 dates! Want to surprise your child and read to our class? Click this link to pick a day!

This week in Literacy:

We finish our FROGS unit and have a Freaky Frog Party this Friday. Students will present their giant frog research folders, enjoy some crafts, snacks, and games and watch Ribbit!  Students are also encouraged to dress like a frog that day! Green, tan, brown, camouflage, get creative!

Our class started a read aloud this week of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. If your child has their own copy of this story or wants to get one, they are welcome to bring them in!

This week in Math:

This week students will review for and take their 2nd quarter math checkin. They will also review geometry concepts and either participate in an enrichment project, or redo their geometry test later in the week. We will begin a new math unit for 3rd quarter next week!

This week in social studies: local history

3.H.1.1 Explain how the experiences and achievements of women, indigenous, religious, and racial groups have contributed to the development of the local community.

3.H.1.2 Explain the lasting impact historical events have had on local communities.
